Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
