A Danish citizen has been convicted of sharing sexually explicit segments from protected movies and TV series on the online platform Reddit.

Based on a law enforcement report reviewed by media outlets, the unnamed individual shared 347 video excerpts of nude scenes in a subreddit he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million times.

Danish authorities confirm he has been handed a seven-month deferred sentence for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts say the defendant was prosecuted under a seldom-invoked clause in Danish intellectual property legislation, with the court ruling that by taking the scenes out of their original context, the accused had damaged the performers' "moral rights".

He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 TB of protected data.

From March 2022 to mid-2023, the user known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit clips featuring over 100 actresses.

He distributed them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.

Per the Denmark's copyright protection organization The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 members and participants were prompted to ask for clips of particular performers.

In 2023, campaigners reported the incident to the police on behalf of the affected artists, filmmakers and production companies, which led to the subreddit being shut down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, one of the actresses whose explicit scenes were shared in the group, explained to Danish broadcasters at the period she believed there was a distinction between appearing naked in a movie and being shown on Reddit.

The performer stated the uploads amounted to "exploitation".

'A significant signal'

The defendant was arrested in fall 2024 and pleaded culpable to the charges recently.

In a comment following the verdict, TRA head Maria Fredenslund said the decision sent an "significant" message "indicating infringements of creators' rights have consequences".

The verdict is considered unprecedented in the country for its use of the "moral rights" clause of the national copyright law, which specifies an artist's work cannot be used in a way which violates their reputation.

Intellectual property expert a legal scholar told the media the legal matter was "rare" for its focus on the harm to the integrity of an performer, rather than to them economically.

How the ruling could affect other countries is unclear.

But she said there may be "an increasing number of such cases" in the coming years with the advancement of AI, where "the sanctity of an individual's creative output might be tempered with much more easily".
